Waiting

The artist does a great job of conveying the "old library" feel. Rapunzel looks sad, yet hopeful at the same time in this picture, which is especially hard to do when the character is sleeping. The soft glow of the lanterns and the light coming through the windows gives it a kind of homey, warm feeling, despite Rapunzel's depressing story. The monarch butterfly acts almost as a symbol of the happiness Rapunzel will achieve later in her life, or as her guide throughout the years she'll spend locked up in the tower. I noticed that Rapunzel's hair isn't as long as the stories depict, which informs the viewer that she still has many years before her adventure begins in the outside world. You can easily guess she's about eleven or twelve in this picture, which also helps give the viewer a sense of when this is happening in her life. Overall, this is an incredible piece of artwork that tells a classic story from a new perspective.
